Silas Morrison letters, 1862-1865 [microform].

The collection consists of a microfilm copy of nine letters of Silas Morrison from 1862-1865. Letters are written by Silas Morrison to his brother, John L. Morrison, who also enlisted in the Army; one letter is from John Kough, a Maryland cousin, to Morrison. Morrison's letters describe his activities and whereabouts during the war, his study of phonography (shorthand), his feelings about Union officers, his reactions to Vallandigham's arrest and to Lincoln's death, and conditions in the Shenandoah Valley.

Clement Laird Vallandigham was born July 29, 1820, in New Lisbon, Ohio (now Lisbon, Ohio), to Clement and Rebecca Laird Vallandigham. His father, a Presbyterian minister, educated his son at home. In 1841, Vallandigham had a dispute with the college president at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He was honorably dismissed, but he never received a degree. Edwin M. Stanton, the future Secretary of War under President Lincoln, was Vallandigham's close friend before the Civil War....

Silas Morrison, teacher and Union soldier, was born circa 1840, probably in Maryland. During the Civil War, he served with Company B, 110th Ohio Regiment in Winchester and Strasburg, Virginia, areas. In 1864, he was transferred to Company K, 3rd Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps, in the Washington (D.C.) area. He was also hospitalized in Ohio, and was in camps in Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
